This project will combine the organic farming with hedgerow training to provide an olive growing system that can be sustainable both from the environmental and economic point of view.
EOSECO will take advantage of selections obtained in the IFAPA-University of Córdoba breeding programme (Spain) and cultivars of the Cordoba World Olive Germplasm Bank, that have been recently planted in experimental trials in commercial orchards of Luque Ecológico.
The evaluation of this germplasm could provide valuable information of the best cultivars/breeding selections and planting densities for organic farming in hedgerow training system.
This project is an ambitious research and recovery study of traditional varieties and different genotypes of olive trees, in current cultivation, abandoned and/or ancient, with the aim of adding value and exploiting them.
OLEO DIVERSITY aims to characterize, select, propagate, and build a reservoir of those elected varieties and propose developments to overcome present and future challenges, considering the environment, nature, farmers, and markets priorities.
